JMDA gives students the opportunity to take dance examinations through the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). The ISTD and the RAD are two of the world’s leading dance examination boards, offering graded and vocational examinations.

The qualifications gained are recognised by the Qualification’s and Curriculum’s Authority (QCA) and are included in the National Qualification’s Framework. When students reach the required standard, they will have the option of taking dance examinations.

As students work their way up through the grades, their technique, artistry and discipline all develop and by the time they achieve their Grade 6 and above, they can claim UCAS points to put towards their university applications. JMDA realise that examinations are not for every student and therefore examinations are not compulsory.

DANCE EXAMINATIONS

JMDA are delighted to have built up hugely successful junior, intermediate and senior competition teams who have competed at Ballymena Modern Dance Festival, 5678 Elite Dance Competition, CDFNI, The Ulster’s and Encore Festival NI. Students are selected to audition for the festival teams when a teacher deems them ready, and it should be noted that the commitment level required is high from both students and their families. Many members of the teams also rehearse and compete in solo, duet and trio sections. Although we are always extremely happy when our students win and place at competitions, we are always hugely proud every time any students put themselves out there to compete, no matter how the result may fall. Nothing makes the team at JMDA happier than when a student is happy with how they have performed.

All students are given the opportunity to perform in our end of year showcase. JMDA showcases aim to be professional, slick and most importantly, fun, for all our students. Our shows have high production values, are fully costumed and usually have a sold out audience. We also bring in a professional production company to record the performances.

JMDA also host a range of open days throughout the academic year, giving parents/guardians a chance to come to The Studio to watch their child in class and see what they have been working on throughout the year. We are delighted that our students have also had the opportunity to perform in numerous external productions including at Disneyland California, multiple corporate events for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, the world premiere of ‘Twisted: The Musical’, as well as feature in professional pantomimes and shows at The Braid Arts Centre and Theatre at the Mill.

TESTIMONIAL

Inspire|Belong|Shine

"The day and hour my daughter arrived at JMDA, she received a warm welcome and was made to feel right at home. Both the standard of teaching and the care for their students is World Class.

Testimony to this is the how JMDA adapted to the challenges of the pandemic, and the online classes, whilst not the same as face to face, have been absolutely brilliant.  She really looks forward to the weekly classes, always learns something new, and is bouncing with enthusiasm afterwards. Thank you JMDA."
